FAQ¶
Which pathogens are most common in racing pigeons?¶
The most frequent and consequential are Newcastle disease virus, pigeon circovirus, pigeon adenovirus, Salmonella, Trichomonas and Candida albicans. Newcastle disease is highly lethal, circovirus causes immunosuppression, and Trichomonas and Candida are routine findings in the digestive tract — all are worth including in routine screening.
How are so many pathogens tested?¶
Sanshi Bio uses real-time quantitative PCR, either as single-pathogen tests or as a multiplex panel that screens several pathogens at once — particularly useful for quarantine of new arrivals, pre-race screening and differentiating mixed infections. What is the difference between pathogen testing and antibody testing?¶
Pathogen testing shows whether the bird is currently carrying the organism, and is used for diagnosis and screening. Antibody titre testing shows how strong the immune response is, and is used to evaluate vaccine efficacy. You need both for precise disease control.
Where should a fancier start?¶
Start with loft biosecurity to build your first line of defence, follow vaccination and immunity for a sound schedule, then use antibody titre testing to verify the response — and look up individual pathogen entries when you suspect a case.
Can test results be used as a diagnosis?¶
Results are an aid to judgement: they help veterinarians and fanciers identify the pathogen and the infection status, but they are not a medical diagnosis. Consult your veterinarian or the Sanshi Bio technical team for decisions on treatment.
